Florida Facts
The population of Boca Raton was approximately 74,764 within city limits and approximately 120,200 in the unincorporated area.
Jacksonville’s beginning dates back to an early 1800’s settlement, called Cowford because cattle crossed the St. John’s River here. The name was changed to Jacksonville in 1882 in honor of General Andrew Jackson, the provisional governor who had forced Spain to surrender Florida to the United States two years earlier.
In 1878, a storm forced the Spanish ship "Providencia" to founder, scattering its cargo of coconuts. Coastal residents planted the coconuts in hopes of making money from the harvest, and a forest of trees sprang up, giving the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton area a distinctive appearance.
