Rhode Island Facts

•	Built in 1880 Channing Memorial Church located in Rhode Island was named for William Ellery Channing, a leader in the Unitarian Church and the abolitionist movement. Julia Ward Howe, author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic", attended this church.
•	The area was purchased from the Narragansett Indians in 1636 by Roger Williams, who cultivated Providence as a refuge from religious persecution.
•	The first circus in the United States was in Newport, Rhode Island in 1774.
