In 1878, a storm forced the Spanish ship "Providencia" to founder, scattering its cargo of coconuts. Coastal residents planted the coconuts in hopes of making money from the harvest, and a forest of trees sprang up, giving the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton area a distinctive appearance. |
